Being a parent – A reminder

It’s May 23rd and I woke up this morning to news about another bombing. Most of the time I don’t even bother watching TV or even really listen to it because there never seems to be anything positive.  It’s just background noise.

This time it was different.  The bombing occurred just as an arena of concert goers were leaving.  This time most of them were young adults, teens, pre-teens or families waiting to pick them up.  My heart sank. In that moment all I could think about was my own children.

I sent them a message “I love you, be safe and have a good tomorrow, XOXO :)”

As a parent sometimes we get so busy and wrapped up in our daily lives that we forget to just stop and tell our loved ones how much they mean to us.

This tragic event was also a reminder how life can change forever in just a moment. We have no control over the actions of others.

That no matter how well we raise our children that life happens and it doesn’t always go as we planned or hoped.

We as parents can be proactive and help them be prepared just in case something unthinkable happens.

As families sometimes we prepare or practice fire safety.  We practice for natural disasters and inclement weather.

In some schools they practice for intruders on campus and lockdowns.  Which is something that still causes some anxiety for me.

Being a retired military member I’ve always talked to my children about the importance of being aware of their surroundings, to pay attention to the people around them, to be cognizant of the exit paths and the safest way out.

I stress the importance of keeping their wit’s about them, try not to panic and stay focused on getting to safety.  It’s all that I can teach them.

So as they get older my job as a parent is never really over, my role just changes slightly.  I go from being their sole source of knowledge, guidance and disciplinarian to more of an advisor and trusted friend.

I will always love them, be there for them and protect them the best way I know how.

The rest is up to destiny.

Thank you for stopping by.

Have a good day, best wishes and positive thoughts to you.
